Which House Doctor are you??

Since I am watching Season 3 and Season 4 is coming up soon, I thought I would take the quiz to see which Doctor from House I am:

http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Reviews/House/House-Quiz.html

Ironically, Amanda and I still don't have our house due to inept mortgage counselors who are not able to accurately do their jobs. While on my way to closing, I get a call that the mortgage fell through because they messed up and due to the fact that my company is tight lipped on salary but what they gave them is more than enough to approve, especially since I have assets and a high credit score (790 mid).

So now I am dealing with the VP of Mortgage and she is so far very impressive (not just a title)!! The best part is that she has the resources of the entire company at her disposal and they are all working on our mortgage...God is so AWESOME!! Nuff said!

One week Amanda until we walk down the sand isle, exchange our vows and love and watch your cousin run into the ocean in a rainbow speedo...

House M.D.

I just bought House Season 3 and have already begun reliving last season's episode. I have a theory about the character House and myself. It actually has a little bit of validity due to the fact that not too long ago, I was sitting with my former team at lunch one day and they brought the show up and how they "hate that guy" and "will not watch that show again". The conversation was more of a "roundtable" and when it came to my turn, I said, "I like him and think his methods are brilliant!" They all looked at me like I had two heads or I dropped the F-Bomb... Then one of them said "you would like him...you are very much like him". I got to thinking that maybe that is true to a point, love a good arguement, a good joke (sometimes at the expense of others) and can be arrogant. In fact, my idea of "the perfect team" that I would like to build and lead would be a team of experts that are opinionated to the point they would debate and push back to make me better as I make them better while they make each other better!! (sound familar) Now, I am not as mean as House most of the time but I can be very direct and make a room really quiet fast...the only difference is that I can love and I can be loved.

In an episode a man asked House why he didn't go into research instead of being a doctor that requires him to be with people as he doesn't seem to like them (people that is). House told the story of when he was in Japan as a young man while his father was stationed there, he and his friend were mountain climbing and his friend fell and injured his leg. They rushed to the hospital and went in the wrong door to get to the emergency room. They passed by an old janitor along the way to the ER. The doctors worked and did all that they could with no improvement, in fact, the infection had spread. The doctors brought in the janitor for a consult. You see the janitor was a Buraku and he was shunned by their culture and the doctors as his ancestors were stable keepers and slaughterhouse workers which made him low and dishonored. The name itself was a slang word of racism and shame. They brought him when they couldn't figure something out because he was that good! He dressed poorly, was unapproachable as a person but he didn't care because at the end of the day...he was RIGHT! And that was all that mattered. This inspired House and in a way it did me. As a follower of Christ, I can't be completely as House and I pray to be more Christ-like everyday but I have thought that I may be a better person and Christian if I didn't care what others think because...I am RIGHT.

Bitter Sweet B-Day

So I sit here at work on my 28th birthday and I am exhausted having worked the worst set of turnarounds a schedule could offer! In the period of five days I span from working until 3 AM to coming in at 4 AM, having to do 8 hour turnarounds leaving me with little time to myself, with Amanda or even to sleep. You know there is a period in Job's life when he was being tested where he just pretty much had nothing left and just sat in his situation (in my own words) and I am closing in on that in my period of trials. I carry around with me a scripture that I read and pray over everyday and it seems to make me feel better and it reads: (Note: I took out the middle part comparing faith to gold which even with it's value can be changed by fire)

"In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a while you may have suffered grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Chirst is revealed." I Peter 1:6-9

I figure that at some point God will reveal his plan and my purpose for all of this and I will not be able to contain my joy! Until then I pray that he moves quickly and for His will to be done, I even have stopped trying to influence it which is big for me. To fully let go...maybe that's why this is happening?!

So to the sweet part (no more bitterness)...I have a mortgage and it isn't that bad. I fought hard on this, one thing about it with lack of sleep I am pretty much straight to the point with people and I had to be for this to happen. So Amanda and I are ready to start down this path...we can't wait but it will be hard to see the comforts of our parents' homes go away. Did we live at home too long...no doubt but was it bad...no way. Our parents are terriffic people and we both are very fortunate! So it's happening, I have a mortgage and a wife coming within weeks of each other!! Wow! Happy Birthday to me!

I am very excited about it all, I am just sorry that my job situation clouds my happiness at times as I miss Amanda a lot and I hate to call her or my parents and they are having fun or doing anything really without me. Family means the world to me as does church and I miss both every week and that is hard! I have job prospects each week and I know that this time will pass and I will be blogging on here about nonsense again soon but I thought I would share this as a kind of thearopy...thanks for listening, I will get off of the couch now and let someone else get on.

Oh by the way, I saw today that I share my birthday with Gene Roddenbery and Jonathan Frakes which is really cool as I love Star Trek!! So RIP Mr. Roddenbery and "make it so, number one!" Engage... (cue music)

Heroes in a Half-Shell...

TURTLE POWER!! So the depths of my dorkness hasn't bottomed out yet! I recently purchased the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) movie that came out in theaters last March. I was not able to see in the theater because Amanda sometimes is hard to get to see "kid's movies" as she refers to them. I can't complain too much, see did see Transformers with me and she liked it a lot so that was cool. I love seeing movies with her but sometimes I need to go with friends or on my own, I get it as I do have a broad taste in what I want to see.

Now for TMNT, I was so excited to see it but got worried because they chose to make the cover look like a cartoon from the original series. But the movie was far from the hand drawn cartoon of my past. It was CGI and very well done! They used a company that is like Pixar but from Japan which made the fight scenes turn out very realistic. They chose to keep things like fighting realistic as they knew that jumping 30 ft in the air wasn't too realstic for a 5 foot tall, talking turtle trained by a rat to be a ninja! Seriously though it was cool. They even had a fight scene that many of us wondered about, I won't spoil it. The bad guys were cool, no Shredder this time but they brought in Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard/Professor Xavior) to be the lead villian. They also used a lot of Men in Black type aliens to round out the fun. The Foot Clan were also involved with a hint of a sequel with Shredder mentioned...

TMNT is cool for everyone, they deal with being different, being excepted and being a family which I think in today's times and the fact the nuclear family is as unstable as it's namesake, it is good to show kid's that they are special, should be proud of that and stay with their family no matter what the world says! And be kind to animals...

Birthday Time

I was reading Amanda's blog entry regarding her birthday and who she shares it with and it made me wonder who I share mine with that is famous. It seems that the 19th of August has an eclectic mix of people who celebrate on this day.

Here are a few:

Bill Clinton, John Stomas, Kevin Dillon, Kyra Sedwick, Lee Ann Womack, Matthew Perry, Fat Joe, Ahmed Best and many more.
So I was born on the same date as Jar Jar Binks, a rapper, Chandler Bing, a country singer, Mrs. Bacon (the Closer), Johnny Drama, Uncle Jesse and a former President (by title only).

Well happy early birthday to all my 8/19ers we are a strange bunch!!

Greatest Movie EVER (Transformers), HP5 & My Job

Well, if you know me you know that I have been with Disney for close to 11 years. I haven't worked anywhere else and I have been around long enough to not have the "pixie dust" and I have been called "old Disney" by many of my peers, friends and those that report to me. "Old Disney" means that I can turn the "Disney" on and off depending on the situation and that I realize that to do business you can't be successful by always being "Disney". So it is no surprise to me that I am at the end of my career rope and I finally have an interview for a potential promotion which would mean more money (nice to have, just look at Amanda's blog to see why), better schedule, a step up to a senior leader (I would have salaried leader's reporting to me) and I could be able to build my own team which I would love to build a team the right way and kick the crap out of every other team in existence!! I would hire like-minded people with my philosophy and work ethic...we would bring the "old Disney" style. They would not be clones because I love to debate, argue and get push back...it makes me better! Now I leave this in the public realm on my blog and I ask that everyone prayer for me on this Wednesday at 4:00-5:00 pm. I want and need this job, it may change my life!

Less seriously...I can not review the Harry Potter movie because I thought it was excellant and it reminded me of the "Empire Strikes Back" piece of the Star Wars Epic. It was a great story and I am amazed at the level of acting that Daniel Radcliffe has grown to. I guess naked plays in England help...not sure. But it is nice to see him grow as an actor because he could easily just ride this out and not get any better. I can say this, I wish that Ron would've had a little more to do or say as he at times is the comic relief.

Transformers was amazing. It was sexy, funny, action packed (they blew everything up!) and the CGI was the best ever. Michael Bay must've learned how to make a movie or Spielberg had a lot of influence on this. I actually got in my truck and thought..."am I driver a Transformer?" I hope they make this a franchise but continue to use the same amount of cutting edge movie making. I want to have this in writing: I predict that Shia Labeouf with the next Tom Hanks. This guy has great comedic timing, amazing depth and he has a great amount of momentum right now carrying him into Indiana Jones 4. Who would believe that he was once on "Even Stevens". Add that to the list of names from the Disney machine... I will do more on Transformers after I see it in IMAX.

Oh yeah, I want a H3...no way to work that in, so I just said it.

Catching Up...

Well...what friggin' crazy month this has been and it won't stop...yet! My job is in limbo, not that I will be fired or anything but my current role (Disney term) is up as I was in a temporary position. I have a good amount of prospects (finally) and hope that I will get the one that pays more and allows me to go to church again. My Ox not only got into the ditch but I think it fell into a ditch made of quicksand but I guess until then I will continue to go to my parents church via their CD ministry... Amen! Oh yeah, did I mention that I signed papers for a house...that could be THE most anxiety ridden process I have ever been through. All Amanda wants to do is talk about furniture and paint but I just want to watch the ink dry on the first mortgage payment so I can breathe again. Anyway, if you want to see it go to Amanda's blog she has posted a link.

What else did I do? Well, not too much we saw Pirates and Fantastic 4... Pirates was a good ending to that story path and I hope if they do more that Jack Sparrow [CAPTAIN] I mean "Captain Jack Sparrow" will have new adventures with new side characters and villians. What an amazing character. F4 was pretty good and would've been great if it didn't seem like two movies into one. It was like the director said "I don't like the Fantastic 4 characters...let's do a Silver Surfer movie" and then he remembered that he was doing the F4 movie so he made it good when they were on screen too. Not complaining, I will get the DVD, watch it again and probably love it. Silver Surfer movie will be interesting if they can keep Larry Fishborne as the voice actor. Now I am anxiously awaiting the Transformers Movie (seeing it tomorrow) and then HP5 which looks amazing!!! (and don't forget the Simpsons Movie)

Finally for this post I wanted to show some pics of when Amanda and I went to Disney MGM Studios for Star Wars Weekends. What a crazy event! It is 200 degrees out there and people are in full Jedi/Sith attire sweating the force right out of them. THEN there were the people who just a strange because it was dress up day... But we saw Ray Park (Darth Maul EpI & Toad X-Men I) and some other cool things... I am attaching a few of the characters we were able to see.

Mish Mash

After a few weeks of drama, the wonderful Google Support Team were about to get me back to the world of blogging! Thanks Google Support Team!!

Anyway, it's been a while since I blogged so I thought I would just catch up on all that has happened lately, in no real order...just what I remember first.

Amanda and I went to see Spiderman 3 and it was pretty good, much better than any of the Batman Sequels (post Keaton and before Batman Begins which was awesome) and any of the Superman Sequels, I & II were good but III was bad and Returns was decent. I thought that it had too many villains and they should've really done more with Venom, including not have Topher Grace's voice and face appear when he had dialogue. Sandman was cool but more of an afterthought to me, it was like "oh yeah we have this sand guy who is doing bank robberies". BTW, no movie villain should just do bank robberies because that is lame...at least Doc Octopus did it fund his plan and it gave Aunt May a chance to meet Spiderman. But I think that the next one will feature more of Venom (hopefully) and maybe let Peter's Professor evolve into his alter ego.

I finished all of "the Batman" Seasons 1-3, it is a very cool animated series (okay it's a cartoon, deal with it!) that has an anime feel. They do a great job of making the characters new and fresh while taking a little from each of the past versions and adding those traits to the character as well. And for the record, I want the original Season 1 & 2 Batmobile to be used in a future movie, it is FRIGGIN' AWESOME.

All of my shows are done for the season, we just finished Lost and it is now more confusing and intriguing than ever before!! Grey's Anatomy made Amanda mad and she will not watch it again...sure. Boston Legal, Battlestar Galactica and other shows that I watch are all done and now I wait for House to end (can't wait, I love that show) and Entourage and Sopranos to end and then I am bored for the Summer... Idol was pretty good but it is on a downward slide, the best singer didn't even make it to the end but Jordin will do well. My Dad bought Bones Season I and it is actually really good, I have been watching it as he finishes discs. It's like a newer version of X-Files. I just caught the 1st showing of "the Lot" and it was really cool...but I am a uber-nerd so you may not like it as much!

I wished I could think of more but I have been working a lot lately and watching lots of TV and listening to lots of music. I will go see Pirates this weekend and then it becomes movie mania with Harry Potter, Simpsons, Transformers, Bourne, F4 and so many others I can't wait!!

Art of Ensemble

I know Amanda will give me crap about writing about this but I think I have some valid ideas, thoughts and concerns. To preface this post I will give some background to show where I am coming from. When I was little, I sang in church for our kids choir because my Grandfather was the Pastor and my Father, the Music Pastor. I hated it and thought it was "dumb" and "for girls". My entire family sang and played instruments so I was around music all of the time but I wasn't interested in following in family tradition.

Then came 12,13,14,15, etc. and my voice wasn't that nice and I had no interest in music or at least on stage music. At the age of 12 I was the sound engineer for my Father's road choir and small ensemble at a Bible College in North Carolina. My Dad gave me the rundown of "what does what" and then left me with a lot of old equipment to go through and see what still worked. I learned a lot from that but what I was actually training for was hearing and blending voices. Now fast forward to my junior year in high school, I started singing in my Dad's church choir because the church we were at already had a sound guy. It was hard because for the past 4 years prior I was behind a board and loved it! I was descent but not great...really high and awkward tenor. I learned everything by repetition.

During my senior year, my Dad talked me into joining a community choir he was starting at a local college here in Orlando. I was pretty bad but it began a path for me that I never thought I would take. I started learning to read music, blend, balance and be in choir. Then I joined a small ensemble that my Dad started (see a trend here?) and started learning to hold my own. For whatever reason, I started singing Bass one day (still don't know why), I think because the Bass Section always sucked and I was ignorant to music and said "I can do that". I then joined yet another group and this was a singing and dancing group that put on 30 minute shows...breathing lessons 101! One day we moved the dancing group to a cappella along with the other small ensemble. One became a ladies barbershop group and the one I stayed in became a vocal orchestra of 12 part a cappella music similar to the Voices of Liberty at EPCOT. I even became the Bass Section Leader for the choir and I am now directing all of the groups from time to time...

So I said all of that to say this: I feel the Art of Ensemble has become a thing of the past. You see I grew up opposite of the natural path of today's singer. I grew up listening and training my ear behind a soundboard so when I started singing in an ensemble I could match and blend faster as I realized what I needed to do to make it sound better. In case I don't say it I want it to be said that to this day I sing little to no solos not because I sound bad but because it isn't fun for me, melody is not as challenging as a tight jazz chord and rhythmic/low Bass line. Moving to a small ensemble made me have to learn a part and have to be dead on, no one to lean on and I couldn't fake it, I wasn't good enough! Singing Tenor and then training myself to sing Bass made me understand chords and harmonies better (I hear 2-4 parts if the guys split) and I have a nice range something like a Eb above middle C to a low D below the C below middle C, that doesn't cover my falsetto which isn't too bad either. In some songs I go from Soprano to low Eb in two to three measures.

When I say "the Art of Ensemble" I mean the discipline, art, complexity and training it takes to make 2-200 voices sound like one. When I watch American Idol, I cringe when they have a group piece because it is horrible and it is because they haven't been together and may not hear harmonies plus they are competing and can't submit to the each other's sound. Today high school chorus is basically Soprano and Tenor training and pampering with the Altos as a dumping ground and all of the off pitch guys faking Bass. Why? Because it is easier to train the Sopranos and Tenors because they have a lot to listen to (radio, MTV, etc.) and practice with and truly many teachers are Sopranos or Tenors and know what to tell them to do. Altos aren't too popular, Nina Simone, Stevie Nicks and Momma Cash are a thing of the past so Altos just make the Sopranos and Tenors shine! Unfortunately, Basses aren't always true to there part they are mostly tone deaf and the ones who have a low range can't be trained because telling a Bass to "support and push" is stupid because Bass notes are natural and they flow naturally if you push then you are driving the pitch! Believe it or not most guys Tenor or Bass have a great falsetto because of the fact that 9 out 10 songs on the radio are high male or female songs and we adapt. Those who make it through to college sing in some great choruses but if you haven't been to a campus lately for college/university choir you may not know that they too are dropping in skill and sound!

The other issue I have found is that you can't find reliable people to make the commitment to rehearsals...you can't learn ensemble by yourself at home. Then there is the fact that we are all too busy and time is not available. Find a great group and ask them how much time they practice together and alone, you may be surprised the best groups learn the notes and rhythms at home and come in to blend, tweak, balance and refine. If you find people with dedication and time, you then must also find people who will adjust their sound to match the group. We warm up with our vowel sounds, matching to out 1st Soprano down to me matching the voice part above each other. If your vowels are the same, you sound like one voice. If not, you may sound flat or off a little bit which isn't good. Vibrato is also restricted as it takes a note a waves it up and down just enough that when you are doing it with a bunch of people you hear the sound wave clash (speed of vibrato as well as the pitch) and sound off or flat. We also work on crazy things like when to breathe or if someone is saying when like "when" or "win". Believe me blending a low Eb and a high one (Soprano range high, three octaves apart) takes time and sacrifice. It takes me time to make a low note sound descent and I know that the Sopranos say the same things about their high notes but then to blend them with others...it takes time.

There is room for all kinds of ensembles and music out there and I listen to a lot of it. It was explained to me this way, "it's like you have a musical house and you adding on another room". You have a bedroom and living room in your house and in your musical house you have your gospel and classical room. To do what my group requires, you have to add on to your house. As I close this post, I want say this: We have "team builders", Myers-Briggs, Group Study & Work Groups and all of these things in school and the professional world but we singers could learn a lot from the orchestras and bands out there who must tune and play as one to make good music. Watch American Idol and see who wins...I am but I am also doing what I can to keep ensemble alive. Don't wait for Boyz II Men, 'Nsync or Backstreet Boys to have a reunion tour or wait for the next version of those groups. Don't leave good ensemble music to the big churches and universities, start or join a choir or a group and you will become a better singer, it worked for me.

Meet the Robinsons (1st Post)

Amanda and I went to the movies yesterday (3/30) & saw "Meet the Robinsons 3-D" & it was really funny with a unique & solid story. And believe it or not it was from the newly restored (from life support) Walt Disney Animation Studios. This movie was based on the novel "A Day With Wilbur Robinson" by William Joyce & adapted for the screen in classic Disney manner.
This film had a Pixar feel and flow to it and would've competed nicely with Pixar if Disney didn't own them, too... In fact, I was skeptical only to be proven right when I saw in the credits that Pixar Genius John Lasseter was the Executive Producer for this film. Rumor has it, he joined the film at the end at the request of Bob Iger to add his touch to the film. Lasseter cleaned up the flow of the story and had a hand in the movie's villian character improvement and whatever he did...it worked! Seeing it in 3-D made it even better as that, to me, is a lost art of film making; it was also cool seeing the original Walt Disney Donald Duck 3-D movie from 1953 at the beginning!

So about the movie (without any spoilers), it had humor for kids and adults with an almost odd group of characters, especially "the Robinsons". The humor was reminiscent of SCTV or even a little bit Monty Python and at times I was one of only a few laughing. I can say for those of you reading that may not know what I am talking about, then it reminded me of shows like Animaniacs or Pinky & the Brain. The film had a running motto that the "father of the future world" lived by, "Keep Moving Forward". To me this was great to see not only did Disney decide to get serious about their roots, animation but they decided to implant some positive thinking into today's kids. By the way the quote was a piece of a quote by the man himself, Walt Disney:

“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
–Walt Disney

Before I close my 1st Blog, you may be asking "what about the classic Disney soundtrack?", well they brought in Danny Elfman to compose this soundtrack. Elfman is an amazing composer, he's not John Williams but for this movie Elfman was PERFECT (think Beetlejuice, Men In Black, Mars Attacks!). Rufus Wainwright composed other tracks and Rob Thomas lends one of his new songs to the record and the All-American Rejects are featured as well. Disney traditionalist will love this part, the best song could be They Might Be Giant's cover of "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" from Disneyworld's Carousel of Progress.

"Meet the Robinsons" was a breathe of relief as I haven't been to a Disney only movie in the theatre in years because they weren't worth the time. The story, music, humor and 50's Sci-Fi feel wrapped up with some memorable characters made "Meet the Robinsons" at must-see and especially if it is in 3-D!
